Warburton, William
(1698–1779)
   Bishop and Polemicist.
   Warburton was consecrated Bishop of Gloucester in 1759. He is remembered for his The Divine Legation of Moses, in which he argued, against the Deists, that the Law of Moses was of divine origin. His argument was that the doctrine of eternal reward and punishment was essential for human order: there was no mention of the doctrine in the Law of Moses and this was so odd that it must have been of divine inspiration. He also produced The Doctrine of Grace directed against the theology of John wesley.
